I recently teamed up with producer Will Brumley, writer/director John J. Caswell, Jr. & The Progressive Theater Workshop to design and illustrate a 24×36″ poster for their new show, God Hates This Show, a cabaret event that skewers the homophobic organization, the Westboro Baptist Church and their current leader Shirley Phelps-Roper. It is currently in the midst of a run at the HERE theater in downtown NYC.
My wife and I attended the show last week and had front row center seats. It is intense, not for the faint of heart, like stepping into madness, scorched earth and, most surprisingly, empathy, revealing Shirley as the tortured spawn of her father Fred Phelps’ hateful delusions. Erin Markey is incredible as Shirley, delivering a ugly, uncomfortable, brilliant performance that reminded me of an unhinged Matthew McCoughney at his best. Her rendition of I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe was powerhouse. Check out this interview with Erin for OUT Magazine for her thoughts on playing Shirley.
