I hope everyone had a great summer! It’s been a busy one and I have some time now to show some new work. This is a piece for the Los Angeles Times about Apple’s new campus in Cupertino. It’s rumored to be the size of the Pentagon and the concept drawings show it as a massive ring-shaped building.
There’s an old-timey mural painted on the side of a restaurant in Cupertino that depicts the town in the 30s or 40s. The art director, Derek Simmons, suggested I work that image into the illustration somehow and this is what I came up with. An older gentleman paints over the old Cupertino that he knows to make way for the new mural of today, showing the new complex, while a young lady checks her tweets.
I wanted to go with an “out with the old, in with the new” approach and I’m really happy with how it worked out.
