Brian Taylor — Walter Mosley for The Washington Post

Last Monday evening I was asked to illustrate a portrait of crime novel writer Walter Mosley for the cover of The Washington Post Sunday Style section (January 22, 2012 edition.) Sketches were due Tuesday and once a rough was picked I finished this up Tuesday night for a Wednesday morning deadline. His latest novel was set in modern day New York City, so an alley way or NYC landscape was the obvious choice to be a backdrop for the portrait.

I thought blue would be the perfect color palette, so didn’t give any other color options. We almost went with one of the roughs where Mosley was holding a revolver himself but at the last second decided against it. I did get to illustrate the revolver to be put in the text as an accent image.

Thanks to Allie for the assignment!
