Daniel Hertzberg – The New Yorker: Gangster Squad

I had the honor of illustrating a film review for “Gangster Squad” in the New Yorker this week. There was also a review for “Jack Reacher” in the article. Both of these films are ultra-violent, unfortunately. So it makes me happy that this piece doesn’t actually show any guns, only used ammo and shadows. Lots of sketches below- some more literal, with actors from the movie while others are more graphic, less specific to the actors. I kinda like the explosion pocket square…

  1. The top right and exploding pocket square sketches would have made great finals but I’m still even more into the chosen concept. I like it when there’s a little something extra going on in a piece. Really nice colors and spacing on this one.

  2. You’re very kind Alex, thanks! Yeah, hopefully the violence is implied, not shown.

  3. Wow, this piece is sooo great. Looked great in print. All those fantastic thumbnails make me feel so very lazy, haha.
