I read about Maurice Sendak’s passing on the day he died and was sad about the news, but not surprised. He talked a lot about death in his recent interviews. Just after lunch, I received a rush job from the Washington Post. The assignment was originally a portrait, but I am very glad the art directors and editor allowed me to steer the drawing in a different direction. Here is the result – it was sent to print that same afternoon, only two hours after the sketch was approved. This was certainly a faster turnaround than my usual jobs and I am happy with what I could draw in the time that was given. I am also extremely honored to have been a small part of the Sendak tributes that were published. His books had a big impact on my life and career. We will miss you, Maurice.

the cat’s out of the bag, you do stunning work in under 3 hours. you’re in for it now.
